The Guide is a 1958 novel by Indian author R.K. Narayan. The story of the transformation of a corrupt tour guide Raju into a Spiritual Sage. Raju fell in love with tourist, wife of an Archaeologist. Raju encourages her to follow her dream & dance. She became a famous dancer and leave Raju behind. Meanwhile, Raju gets involved in a forgery case and convicted. After completing his sentence he doesn’t want to go back to his village and ultimately becomes a Sadhu.

This book is also turned into a successful Bollywood movie with the same title starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman.

God of small things is a story of  Estha and Rahel (fraternal twins) and their experiences about society. The book shows how small things affect people’s behaviour and lives. The story is setup in Ayemenem, Kerala where innocent twins first introduced to society’s failure like Communism, Castism and Social Taboos. This was the debut book by Arundhati Roy for which she got Booker Prize in 1997.

Malgudi Days by R.K Narayan was published in 1943 by Indian Thought Publications. It is a collection of 32 short stories of a village named Malgudi. Every story of this book shows a different angle of life. This book is one of the best Indian books I’ve ever read. This book shows the real India of that era. Through this book, the author describes that “In India, you just have to look out of your window to pick up a character and thereby a story.”

5. The Great Indian Novel

The Great Indian Novel is written by Shashi Tharoor and published in 1989. It is a Political Satire on Indian Independence movement and post-independence era. The story of Indian Mythology epic Mahabharata is retold with a crisp of Indian Politics. The novel has 18 books similar to 18 books of Mahabharata. Gandhi is portrayed as Bhishma whereas Nehru as Dhritarashtra of The Mahabharata.

The White Tiger is the debut novel of Aravind Adiga published in 2008. The novel shows a darkly humorous side of Indian class system. This is a story of Balram Halwai, a common villager who transform himself from a driver to an entrepreneur. In between, he killed his master and escaped to a different city to survive. The book was awarded Man Booker Prize in the same year it was published.

This is the first book of Shiva Trilogy written by Amish Tripathi. It is a story based in Meluha, a city created by Lord Ram. This book shows the human side of the God.
